The Waterfall of the Gods — 12m horseshoe waterfall right on the Ring Road. Named for Iceland's conversion to Christianity in 1000 AD.

Europe's most powerful hot spring. Free, 10-min stop. Krauma Geothermal Baths next door if a soak is wanted.

Wide series of small cascades emerging directly from an ancient lava field. Barnafoss upstream. 20 min from Deildartunguhver.

Large volcanic crater with a marked trail to the rim. Short walk, good views. Roadside.

Iceland's best-preserved turf farm museum — hobbit-like grass-roofed rooms connected by a central passageway. Good stop for the last leg of the drive. Langspil on display.

Infinity geothermal pools on a cliff 49m above Skjálfandi Bay, frequented daily by Húsavík locals. One of the best chances on the trip to sit with Icelanders. Book in advance.

Basalt sea stack shaped like a rhinoceros. Photogenic. Most out-of-the-way of the detours — skip if the day runs long.

Milky-blue geothermal lagoon in a lava field. Reviews are broadly positive — relaxing, roughly half the Blue Lagoon price, and less crowded. The main criticism is that the old facility felt dated compared to newer lagoons like GeoSea and Vök Baths. The renovation (closed Jan 2026, reopening late June/early July 2026 as Earth Lagoon Mývatn) adds 35% more space, new pools, and improved facilities — post-renovation it should address most past complaints. The timing risk is the main issue: Jul 10 is right at the edge of the expected reopening window.

Boiling sulphur mud pots, steaming vents, vivid orange mineral colours. One of the most alien landscapes in Iceland. Free, roadside.

Lava field of surreal pillar formations up to 20m tall. Walking trails, free entry. Game of Thrones filming location.

Aqua-blue geothermal crater lake inside an active volcanic caldera. Adjacent Leirhnjúkur lava field still steams from the 1984 eruption — easy 90-min walk.

Europe's most powerful waterfall — 44m drop, 100m wide. Take paved Route 862 (west side). Selfoss waterfall 20 min upstream is worth adding.

Iceland's third-tallest waterfall (128m) with dramatic horizontal red clay bands in the cliff face. Rewarding hike.

Lava cave with a geothermal pool. Bathing not allowed (water too hot since 1975–84 Krafla eruptions). Overrated — skip it.

Floating geothermal pools built directly into a lake — Iceland's only certified drinkable hot springs. Intimate and serene. 10 min from Egilsstaðir. Book in advance.

Towering hexagonal basalt columns lining a turquoise glacial river. East bank trail: easy 2 km each way. Turquoise colour varies with river conditions — ask locals before going.

Colorful wooden houses and thriving arts scene at the end of a long fjord. The drive over Fjarðarheiði Pass is half the experience. Rainbow-painted street to the blue church. Artsy cafés throughout. Plan 2–3 hours. Strong candidate for the 14-year-old's favourite stop of the trip.

A woman named Petra spent her entire life collecting minerals from East Iceland. Now a museum filling her house and garden. Eccentric, personal, unlike anything else. Café on site for lunch. Open May–Oct.

Annual heavy metal festival in a small East Fjords town — locals and international acts. Check if 2026 edition is running: @eistnaflug_festival on Instagram.

Icebergs calving off Breiðamerkurjökull glacier floating across a deep blue lagoon. Free to walk the shore. Harbour seals May–Sep. Optional zodiac boat tour (75 min, book in advance) goes right to the glacier wall.

Icebergs washed up on black sand. Translucent blue and white ice against dark sand. Free, right off the road. Visit immediately after Jökulsárlón.

Hidden moss-covered canyon with two waterfalls (Hangandifoss and Múlafoss). No road signage, rough 2 km gravel access track. Moderate hike. Far fewer crowds than Jökulsárlón.

100m deep, 2 km long canyon. Easy roadside access off Ring Road onto Route 206. Rim trail with dramatic views.

Guided walk on the glacier with crampons and ice axes. Blue ice streaked with black volcanic ash. 3–4 hours total. Probably the hardest stop to squeeze in on this day.

30m waterfall hidden behind the Skógar Museum — you can walk behind it with almost no other visitors. Park at the museum and walk 10 min.

Turf houses and Icelandic rural artifacts at the foot of Skógafoss. Pairs naturally with Kvernufoss. Café on site.

Annual family, music, and BBQ festival in Selfoss. Family festival and BBQ are free entry on Jul 12. Fairground rides, markets, Icelandic meat producers grilling. Right on the route to Hvolsvöllur.

Snorkeling between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Drysuits provided. No diving cert needed. ~100m visibility. ~4 hrs total.

Strokkur geyser erupts every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water up to 30 meters. No booking — just show up and wait.

Two-tiered waterfall plunging 32m into a basalt canyon. Rainbows on sunny days. Café on site. 10 min from Geysir.

New (2025) design-forward geothermal spa on the Golden Circle route. Infinity pool, forest pool, cascading waterfall, two saunas, cold pool. Ylja Restaurant — celebrated Icelandic chef, farm-to-table. Book in advance.

Eight natural geothermal pools on a cliff over the fjord. Geothermal water from 1,400m blended with Atlantic seawater. ~30 min from Þingvellir. Good end to the Golden Circle day.

3 km each way from Hveragerði — hike to a geothermal river you can bathe in. No booking, no fee. One of the best free things in Iceland.

Laugardalslaug is Reykjavík's largest public pool — great for a final soak with locals before flying home.
